Maker Ed’s mission is to create more opportunities for young people to develop confidence, creativity, and spark an interest in science, technology, engineering, math, the arts, and learning as a whole through making. We want young people to grow and eventually lead the maker movement. In our first year, we’ve engaged over 90,000 youth and families in making experiences through our successful Maker Corps program. Of the 108 Maker Corps members we’ve trained and placed in 34 youth-serving organizations, across nineteen states this summer, 23 have been hired as permanent employees and the majority have remained active mentors in their communities. The Maker Corps members reflect the racial and ethnic demographics of the nation and over 55% are women. Maker Ed and its partners are developing the next generation of makers as a result of a new workforce for libraries, museums, schools, and community-based organizations.
